6 Years Since I Dropped out of College

This is part 3 to the previous posts I’ve written about my school career or lack there of. I think it is interesting for me to analyze that decision as the years go on because my view and place in life is continuously changing.

I had 3 years of high school and a semester of college to teach me that I am not fit for the structure and expectations of the traditional education system. Not to be mistaken with a loathing, or lack of desire to learn. I am obsessed with learning, observing, applying, and analyzing. For me and my personality, entrepreneurship was the perfect route.

When I left college I got signed with a modeling agency and while my creative side got to shine and be used in a fun new unique way, the number one thing I learned was how much of a business game it is. I had to quickly learn how to run myself like a business, networking, day to day operations, improvements, etc. When I got married, moved away, and began looking for another job, I found coffee.

My first week working in the cafe made me realize that I NEVER EVER EVER wanted to run a coffee shop. By month 8 I realized that I wanted control of pretty much everything and that I should start my own cafe. Leaving school wasn’t a reliever into “oh good now I don’t have to do anything” it was a massive motivator. The mental break from school allowed me to think clearly and creatively. I was able to be industrious and learn everything I possibly could about business and the coffee world.

I found where I was supposed to be by working, asking lots of questions, surrounding myself with the right people, and being open to lifestyle opportunities. I allowed my time at that cafe and working a second job as well to be the crash course in day to day business living that I needed. I was sure to soak in every moment, I took note of what I loved, and took note of what I would do differently.

In the past 6 years I have owned and flipped a house, worked 3 jobs at once, lived in a van, built a mobile coffee shop, lived with family, started and closed businesses, sold a house, expanded our current business, lived in an apartment, and so much in-between. There is no step by step process, no overnight success, you have to put in your time. Whether you go to school or not, the number 1 factor for positive change and progress will be your willingness to do what is necessary to thank yourself in 5 years.

Put in the time, know that it is worth it, and enjoy every minute as you go.

Here’s to where we will all be in 6 more years.
